At least 72 artisanal miners killed in alleged air strike in Sudan
The mining region of Jabal al-Uqaydat is near Sudan’s disputed border with Egypt, and it is described as one of the country’s busiest mining zones.
At least 72 artisanal miners were killed in an alleged air strike in Sudan’s Jabal al-Uqaydat area, according to Emergency Lawyers, a Khartoum-based human rights group, as reported by Mining.com.
Emergency Lawyers said in a statement posted on X that Egyptian warplanes carried out the attacks and targeted civilians. Mining.com notes it could not verify social media videos and images that reportedly show dozens of bodies from the incident.
Mining.com said Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s de facto leader, plans to launch an official investigation into the attacks.
The report added that Jabal al-Uqaydat is a mountainous, traditional gold-mining region near Sudan’s disputed border with Egypt. It also said the zone is considered among Sudan’s busiest mining areas and that artisanal mining accounts for more than 80% of the country’s mining industry, citing Sudan Tribune reporting.
