Android 17 privacy standard hides less than “fully hidden” browsing

Google says the feature will obscure which site is being opened, even though other parts of web requests may still be visible.

Google is rolling out a new privacy standard in Android 17 that aims to reduce what online activity reveals, but it does not make browsing fully private, according to Decrypt.

The outlet reports that the update scrambles only one specific element of a web request that previously remained visible, the name of the site being opened.

Because that site name is still a key identifier that can be exposed in normal browsing flows, the change is described as an improvement while still leaving identifiable signals in place.

The implication for users is that Android 17 will provide stronger privacy controls than before, but it will not fully hide browsing activity from all forms of observation.
