El Niño seen as less disruptive than feared for global weather
World Grain says stronger to super El Niño events can vary widely in impact, and the current one is occurring alongside higher soil moisture from prior La Niña conditions.
World Grain reports that officials had warned of a “super” El Niño, but the climate pattern has so far been less problematic than major El Niño events in 2015, 1997 and 1982.
The outlet says El Niño is expected to persist for several more months, meaning adverse weather risks could still intensify, because each ENSO event interacts with other prevailing weather patterns.
World Grain adds that many tropical regions entered this ENSO cycle with frequent, abundant rainfall and strong soil moisture, attributing part of that to moisture from the previous La Niña.
It also cautions that some extreme conditions in Europe, including excessive heat and drought, are not necessarily directly caused by El Niño, and notes drought and heat had already been present during the summer of 2025.
