GalaxySpace delivers a turnkey CubeSat to Thailand, China expands space reach
The Lingzhi-09 Thailand CubeSat, built and deployed for GISTDA, is set to collect remote-sensing data for land, agriculture and ecological uses.
Beijing-based GalaxySpace said it deployed what it called China’s first turnkey satellite export to Southeast Asia with the launch of the Lingzhi-09 Thailand CubeSat. The satellite went into orbit aboard a Long March-6C rocket, launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in Shanxi province on Tuesday, along with six other satellites, according to SCMP Economy.
GalaxySpace said the CubeSat was developed for Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency, with plans to collect remote-sensing data for land, agriculture and ecological applications. The mission is also intended to support practical training for Thai university students, with Thai personnel trained in China and later GalaxySpace teams helping build and test Thailand’s ground system.
The company framed the deal as a packaged, end-to-end service that covers the spacecraft, ground system and personnel training, marking the first time a Chinese commercial space firm developed, launched and deployed a complete satellite in orbit for a Southeast Asian customer as a packaged solution. SCMP Economy also cited GalaxySpace’s shift from exporting products toward exporting services and ecosystems.
The push is part of broader expansion by China’s commercial space sector as it ramps up constellation deployments and seeks overseas customers, amid competition with SpaceX’s Starlink project, the outlet reported.
