Trump signs order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America

The executive order directs the Interior Department to update the lake's name in the US geographic naming service, while Canada would not be required to follow the US change.

CNBC reports that President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Interior Department to update the name of Lake Ontario in the US geographic naming service, changing it to "Lake America."

Trump said the order would take effect immediately, according to CNBC.

The move comes as Trump escalates a trade dispute with Canada, as described by CNBC and echoed by SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy also notes that the US order cannot compel Canada to adopt the same naming convention, meaning the lake’s name could differ across the two countries.
