VanEck data flags bitcoin capitulation signals, with mixed 90- and 180-day odds

VanEck says its dashboard showed eight of 12 signals active on Aug. 12, but bitcoin underperformed its own baseline over the next 90 and 180 days when eight to 12 signals were in play.

Bitcoin’s late-August rebound has been accompanied by data from VanEck that the firm describes as broad capitulation, though it warns that dense “bottom” signals have not reliably timed the next six months. According to CryptoSlate, VanEck’s dashboard showed eight of its 12 signals active prior to an Aug. 19 pump, with the initial move higher consistent with a sharp reset in bearish positioning.

CryptoSlate reports that VanEck’s historical work distinguishes capitulation from timing, noting that comparable signal clusters tended to trail bitcoin’s all-days baseline over both 90- and 180-day windows even when their one-year returns were stronger. The outlet also cites that eight-signal readings depend on a rule tied to price drawdowns, where the price-drop component triggers only after bitcoin has fallen at least 35% and VanEck’s measured 49% drawdown ranked at the 35th percentile, which could reduce the count to seven if other percentile logic is applied.

The warning is reinforced by VanEck’s forward-return table, which CryptoSlate says shows bitcoin trailing its baseline over 90 and 180 days on observation days when eight to 12 signals were active. While the dashboard history allows for a longer-term recovery after capitulation, CryptoSlate reports it found no excess return versus the baseline inside six months and cautioned that VanEck’s sample of observation days is highly overlapping, meaning the dataset does not represent 115 independent market bottoms.
