Gunfire and clashes in Niamey after attempted attack on presidential palace

The conflict reportedly began after mutineers took soldiers hostage at a base near Niamey’s airport, with the military saying it is gradually regaining control.

Clashes erupted in Niamey, Niger, on Saturday between the presidential guard and elements of the armed forces after a night of heavy gunfire across parts of the city, according to Agence France-Presse.

A security source cited by SCMP Economy said there was an attempt by insurgents linked to the armed forces to enter the presidential palace, but they were pushed back, and gunfire continued at the palace.

An African diplomat in Niamey said the presidential guard remains loyal to ruler General Abdourahamane Tiani.

Niger’s military said it was gradually regaining control after the mutineers took soldiers hostage at a base next to the capital’s airport.
