Japan to deploy fighter jets to India for first joint exercise
The Veer Guardian 26 drills run from September 9 to 21 in Rajasthan, involving the Indian Air Force.
Japan plans to deploy fighter jets in India for the first time next month as part of a new joint training exercise with the Indian Air Force, according to a Japan Air Self-Defence Force announcement reported by SCMP Economy.
The exercise, Veer Guardian 26, will take place in Rajasthan in western India from September 9 to 21, and Japanese officials said it is intended to build mutual understanding and trust.
SCMP Economy said the move also reflects Japan’s broader effort to strengthen security cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners as Tokyo increases defence spending in response to China’s growing military power.
The outlet added that Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Koizumi met India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and pledged to further deepen defence cooperation through bilateral exercises aimed at supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific.
