Metaplanet CEO says Asia is poised for Bitcoin’s next cycle

He tied the shift to regulatory changes across Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, alongside Metaplanet’s pivot to holding Bitcoin on its balance sheet.

Bitcoin’s next market cycle will be driven by Asia, Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich argued at Bitcoin Asia, saying a changing regulatory backdrop is creating an opening for companies and investors looking to park capital in digital assets.

Gerovich said the prior Bitcoin cycles were led by the West and that an Asian cycle has already begun, adding that the key question is who will build it. He also pointed to buyers he expects to stay through the current environment, saying the bottom is in and that he expects a brighter rest of the year.

He described Metaplanet’s own turnaround, saying the company went from being small and stuck to becoming the third biggest Bitcoin treasury after pivoting in 2024 from its hotel and technology business to buying Bitcoin. Gerovich said the Tokyo Stock Exchange now holds 43,000 bitcoins worth about $3.3 billion at today’s prices.

Metaplanet’s CEO said the company uses Bitcoin holdings as a way for investors to gain exposure through its regulated shares, and he framed the strategy as an opportunity for Asian firms as countries including Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore update rules to support digital assets. He emphasized Japan’s savings culture and argued capital can now be put to work rather than hoarded as cash.
