Tokyo plans missile shelter retrofit at Yaesu car park near Tokyo Station
The underground site would provide about 13,000 square meters of space and become the capital’s second emergency underground shelter.
The Tokyo metropolitan government has unveiled plans to convert an underground parking facility near Tokyo Station into a ballistic missile shelter for residents and tourists, according to SCMP Economy.
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said a survey for revamping the Yaesu car park would begin in the current financial year through March, as part of work expected to include blast-proof doors and storage shelves for emergency supplies.
A metropolitan government official said the Yaesu facility covers roughly 13,000 square meters and would become the city’s second emergency underground shelter, after a separate conversion underway at the Azabu-Juban subway station.
Koike said the car park was selected for its proximity to Tokyo Station, which she described as a key gateway area for visitors.
