Ferry capsizes off northern Cyprus, killing at least eight

Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Unal Ustel said the ferry took on water about 15 minutes after departure amid adverse weather, and police detained eight people including the captain for investigation.

At least eight people died after a ferry carrying nearly 270 passengers and crew capsized off the coast of breakaway northern Cyprus, Turkish media reported, citing statements from Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Unal Ustel.

Ustel told Turkish state broadcaster TRT that 237 people had been rescued, while officials said a search is ongoing for another 22 people.

Ustel said the ferry faced adverse weather and began taking on water about 15 minutes after departure, with a call for help issued soon afterward.

According to Ustel, police detained eight people, including the ferry captain, as part of an investigation into the sinking.
