Andy Burnham’s first month as UK prime minister has been marked by comparatively low-cost voter sweeteners, but the political and policy trade-offs are expected to intensify as parliament returns from its summer break in the coming days, according to SCMP Economy.

Since succeeding Keir Starmer on July 20, Burnham has highlighted measures such as cutting electricity bills and bus fares, while leaning into an informal public style that includes social media outreach and events with senior government officials.

SCMP Economy also notes that Burnham’s initial momentum was supported by the ruling Labour Party’s poll bounce, partly tied to difficulties facing hard-right rival Nigel Farage, and that lawmakers’ time on holiday has so far helped the new prime minister avoid some harder issues.
