Apple rolls out its first 2nm M6 chip for new Mac mini and Mac Studio
The M6 is built on TSMC's 2nm process and is positioned to deliver nearly 30% more peak GPU compute for AI than the M5, with local LLM support on up to 32GB of memory.
Apple has introduced its first 2nm chip, the M6, targeting improved on-device AI performance. The chip is built on TSMC's most advanced 2nm process and debuts in a refreshed Mac mini lineup, alongside a more powerful M5 Ultra in an updated Mac Studio, according to Yahoo Finance.
The M6 is described as delivering nearly 30% more peak GPU compute for AI than the M5 and over eight times the GPU compute of the M1. Apple says the upgrade supports faster execution of AI models on the device, and configurations with up to 32GB of memory are intended to run large language models locally without sending data to the cloud.
Apple is also framing the strategy around distributing AI compute across its installed base. Yahoo Finance reports that Apple has roughly 2.5 billion devices in use, and it argues that the company is betting on processing on-device rather than building the kind of AI data center capacity that rivals have been funding.
The new Mac mini is available for preorder, with shipping set for Sept. 22, and it starts at $899. The piece also notes that Apple’s broader challenge may be software readiness, citing delays and changes to Siri and other AI-related features as open questions for fully leveraging the new chip.
