Asia diesel exports surge to Africa as Middle East supplies fall

Refiners in Asia are expected to send up to 15 million barrels of diesel to Africa in August, the highest monthly volume in at least four and a half years, Reuters data reviewed showed.

Asia’s diesel shipments to Africa have surged to nearly five-year highs, while Middle East exports to the region have fallen to nine-year lows, according to ship-tracking data and volumes analyzed by Reuters.

The report links the supply squeeze to Middle East conflict-related shipping risks, including security threats in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, as well as Houthis’ attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure that have disrupted flows from Saudi Arabia.

Reuters said Saudi Arabia had accounted for as much as 40% of Africa’s diesel imports last year, but disruptions tied to Strait of Hormuz closure and Red Sea shipping threats have reduced the volume of diesel moving to Africa.

The outlet added that Asian refiners were expected to supply up to 15 million barrels of diesel to Africa in August, partially offsetting Middle East exports tracked as crumbling to the lowest level in nearly nine years.
