Fed rate expectations and Middle East tensions drag bitcoin and ethereum

Bitcoin was down 0.7% from Sunday’s open to $77,695.48, while ethereum opened at $2,417.98, each later moving higher by 9:06 a.m. ET.

Bitcoin opened Monday, August 31, 2026 at $77,695.48, down 0.7% from Sunday’s opening price, and was trading at $77,999.80 as of 9:06 a.m. ET, according to Yahoo Finance.

Ethereum opened at $2,417.98, down 1.6% from Sunday’s opening price, and later rose to $2,453.78 as of 9:06 a.m. ET, though both assets were still well below Friday’s opening levels.

Yahoo Finance cited higher rate expectations following Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech and said the Fed reiterated its focus on lowering prices.

The outlet also linked renewed Middle East hostilities, including U.S. airstrikes over the weekend, to higher oil prices and expectations that rate hikes could be imminent this year.
