Google Maps renames Lake Ontario to “Lake America” for US users

The change follows a Trump order this week, as a US-Canada trade war escalates with billions of dollars in added tariffs on each side.

Google has updated its Maps app so that users in the United States will see Lake Ontario renamed as “Lake America,” while Canada will continue to display “Lake Ontario,” according to the company’s statement.

Google said the decision follows its practice of using names from the US Geographic Names Information System, and that updates for the bodies of water with country specific names are starting to roll out now.

The update comes days after US President Donald Trump ordered the lake name change, amid an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada that has led both countries to impose billions of dollars in added tariffs on each other’s goods.

The renaming order drew public pushback, including a billboard message from Ontario Premier Doug Ford on the Canadian shore, while the White House and the offices of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ford did not immediately comment on Google’s decision.
