US forces strike Iranian launchers on Larak island near Strait of Hormuz
The attack is the first known US strikes on Iran since late July, amid US threats of costly sanctions against countries that support Tehran.
US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Iran’s Larak island on Sunday, according to a US official cited by SCMP Economy, marking the first known American strikes on Iran since late July.
The official said Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping chokepoint.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the attack killed and wounded several soldiers and citizens, and Iranian state media reported that Tehran would respond with “punishment.”
SCMP Economy also reported that Iranian semi-official Tasnim said the US carried out a drone strike on the island, while SCMP Economy noted that President Donald Trump said last week all mines had been detonated or removed from international waters of the Strait of Hormuz. The outlet added that Washington has threatened costly sanctions on countries supporting Iran as the conflict has faced a stalemate in recent weeks.
