XRPL study finds extra peer links can greatly raise consensus attack thresholds

At 60% validator participation, adding two peer connections per node lifted the modeled quorum-disruption threshold from 11% to 38% under hub-targeted removal.

A new XRP Ledger study concludes that adding a small amount of peer-to-peer connectivity can make XRPL consensus more resistant to targeted attacks aimed at disrupting validator message flow. The research says XRPL consensus relies on enough trusted validators receiving one another’s messages, and that a separate peer network carries those messages between servers. The paper tests a graph approach called random K-out augmentation, where each participating node creates K new undirected edges to peers selected uniformly at random. Under a scenario with 60% participation and K=2, the model’s quorum critical attack size rose from 11% to 38% when removals targeted the highest-degree nodes, and it rose from 12% to 33% when removals were ordered by betweenness centrality, which prioritizes nodes that lie on many shortest paths. The study uses a metric tied to whether enough validators remain together in a single connected component, defined in the simulations as fewer than 80% of validators. It reports that K=3 at 80% and 100% participation matched or exceeded robustness produced by about 20 to 25 iterations of a more invasive rewiring strategy, while K-out augmentation preserved the original edge set more closely based on Jaccard similarity. For inputs, the authors reused 1,290 hourly snapshots collected over two months in 2022 and selected the snapshot closest to the dataset’s average characteristics, using a representative graph with 952 nodes, 15,070 edges, and an average degree of 31.7. The paper also notes that observed attack cost was not established and that the simulations randomly select validator nodes from the graph since the dataset did not identify which nodes were validators.
