AI data centers tested to cut Nvidia chip power draw on demand

Luxor Energy and Bentaus say a Nvidia B200 reduced its power draw to about 25% within half a second, then returned to full speed after the restriction ended.

AI data center operations are increasingly constrained by electricity availability, since inference workloads can require fast, large bursts of power that local grids may not be able to provide quickly, according to CryptoSlate.

The outlet describes a demonstration by Luxor Energy, which traces its roots to Bitcoin mining, and Bentaus, whose software manages how much electricity computer chips use.

In the test, the companies controlled a single Nvidia B200 chip performing AI inference, and when restrictions were applied the chip’s power draw fell to roughly 25% of normal within half a second.

CryptoSlate reports that Luxor’s chief operating officer, Ethan Vera, said no job failed and no work in progress was lost, and the chip resumed full speed when the restriction ended, though overall processing throughput was lower during the power cap.
