Bitcoin-based art project ties ordinal decay to future halving
The project says its inscriptions will begin real-time pixel decay at the next bitcoin halving in April 2028, with one pixel disappearing per block mined.
Bitcoin Magazine describes an art concept called Remains by artist Rupture that links physical artwork to on-chain behavior through ordinals and inscriptions.
The series is described as four hybrid works where a painting and a related ordinal are structurally bound, and each inscription contains exactly 210,000 pixels, said to match the number of blocks mined in a bitcoin halving epoch.
Bitcoin Magazine also says the inscriptions are designed to decay in real time starting at the next halving in April 2028, with one pixel dying for every block the network mines, and it says the only way to stop the decay is to hide a unique alphanumeric code beneath the surface of the physical painting.
According to Bitcoin Magazine, the code can be retrieved only by destroying a meaningful portion of the work and inscribing it as a “child” of the ordinal to permanently halt the decay, while preserving the painting would instead consume the image on the blockchain.
