BP starts Fayoum-4 gas production in Egypt ahead of schedule

The Fayoum-4 project adds about 80 million cubic feet per day and is expected to reduce Egypt's reliance on large scale LNG imports.

BP has started production from the Fayoum-4 well in Egypt’s West Nile Delta, roughly two years ahead of schedule, OilPrice reports. The new output adds around 80 million cubic feet per day of natural gas to a market where declining domestic production has pushed Cairo back toward large scale LNG imports, according to Egyptian media.

Production from Fayoum-4 is being routed to BP’s existing West Nile Delta processing facilities through the Giza-Fayoum pipeline, removing the need for new subsea infrastructure. BP operates the facilities with an 82.75% interest, while Harbour Energy holds 17.25%.

The Fayoum discovery came during BP’s 2025 exploration campaign, with the company later drilling a sidetrack to reach Messinian reservoir layers at a depth of about 3,000 meters, OilPrice said. Using existing infrastructure, BP was able to move first production forward by about two years.

OilPrice also notes that Egypt’s domestic output has fallen sharply since a 2021 peak, contributing to the country abandoning net LNG exporter status and spending billions on imported cargoes. BP plans to invest around $1.5 billion in Egyptian natural gas exploration and development during the 2026/27 fiscal year.
