Experts warn Starship orbital failure could generate massive debris
Aerospace expert analysis says an in-orbit explosion could create hazards for other spacecraft and people, with debris potentially larger than prior anti-satellite test events.
As SpaceX prepares for the Starship system’s first orbital test attempt later this month, an aerospace expert warned that an in-flight catastrophe could create significant debris in low-Earth orbit.
According to SCMP Economy, the scenario that most concerns experts is an upper-stage explosion in orbit, which could generate a debris cloud large enough to pose hazards to other objects in space as well as humans.
The expert said the risk would be similar in kind to the debris created by a Russian anti-satellite missile test, but likely on a larger scale in terms of the amount of debris produced.
