France imposes fee on ultra-fast fashion sold on Asian e-commerce sites
The measure, effective Tuesday, sets a sliding per-item scale, with fees rising to 50 cents for certain underwear, €2 for T-shirts, €9 for jeans, and €12 for jackets in 2026.
France will start charging a fee on ultra-fast fashion items sold online by major Asian e-commerce platforms, including Shein, Temu and AliExpress, beginning Tuesday, according to SCMP Economy.
The levy is tied to legislation passed by the French parliament in June to regulate “ultra-fast fashion” companies that sell high volumes of low-quality clothing at very low prices.
Under the rules, ultra-fast fashion is determined using two criteria, the volume of clothing placed on the market and the relationship between the cost of repairing garments and their purchase price.
SCMP Economy reports that the per-item fee will vary on a set scale based on those standards, with 2026 charges such as a 50 cent levy on qualifying underwear, increasing to €2 for T-shirts, €9 for jeans and €12 for a jacket.
