IperionX wins second U.S. Army SBIR for domestic titanium production
The SBIR contract has a $99.0 million ceiling, with Task Orders 1 and 2 totaling about $19.8 million and $79.2 million remaining.
Mining.com reports IperionX has received a second Small Business Innovation Research contract from the U.S. Army focused on low-cost, domestic titanium for defense applications.
The contract allows qualifying U.S. government agencies to place project-specific orders under an IDIQ structure capped at $99.0 million. Task Orders 1 and 2 have an aggregate stated value of about $19.8 million, leaving roughly $79.2 million available under the ceiling.
The company said the SBIR funding is intended to support equipment and manufacturing systems to expand its domestic titanium powder-to-part capacity, including bringing additional manufacturing steps in house to support shorter lead times and potentially lower acquisition and production costs for defense uses.
IperionX said the program will build out integrated titanium powder-to-finished-component operations, including continuous HSPT and dehydride furnace capacity, and add equipment to bring titanium fastener finishing fully in house at its Virginia facility, with planned manufacturing of track pins, bolts, and fasteners at Detroit Arsenal and the Army Research Laboratory’s Aberdeen Proving Ground.
