Li Ka-shing family firms and Henderson Land pledge yuan for Nepal-Tibet floods
The pledges include 15 million yuan each from Li family-linked companies, as the death toll tops 1,000 and thousands remain missing after the border flash floods.
Tycoon Li Ka-shing and his family-backed conglomerate, along with Henderson Land Development and the Lee Shau Kee Foundation, have pledged 15 million yuan each to support victims of deadly flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border, according to SCMP Economy.
The donations are being made through the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government’s disaster relief account, following condolences issued by the CK Asset Holdings and CK Hutchison Holdings group and the Lee Shau Kee Foundation.
The disaster was triggered when a massive wall of mud and rock collapsed into a river along the Himalayan border between Nepal and Tibet, unleashing catastrophic flooding that has killed more than 1,000 people and left thousands missing.
As of Tuesday 8am, 1,010 deaths and 4,599 missing were reported, while Xinhua said 16 people died and 546 remained missing in Tibet, SCMP Economy noted. In Hong Kong, local groups have also launched fundraising efforts, including HK$50 million to a disaster relief fund, HK$20 million from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and 30 million yuan from the Macau government.
