NSE records record ₹39,718 crore turnover in closing auction

The NSE said the surge came during the MSCI August 2026 index rebalancing, after CAS had been introduced on Aug. 3.

India’s National Stock Exchange logged a record ₹39,718 crore in turnover in its Closing Auction Session on Aug. 31, accounting for 22% of the exchange’s total cash market turnover, according to LiveMint Markets.

The exchange said the session saw more than 98,000 unique investors participate, with NSE holding a 99.9% market share in CAS activity during the day, and turnover coming in around 42 times higher than the prior trading session.

LiveMint Markets reported that the sharp jump aligned with the MSCI August 2026 Index Review, which took effect at the close of trading on Aug. 31 and typically draws heavy end-of-day trading as index funds, ETFs, and other passive investors rebalance portfolios.

NSE said the first major index rebalancing event since CAS went live earlier in the month served as a key test for the new closing price discovery mechanism, and it cited participation from index funds and passive investors as evidence of confidence in the tool.
