PCA tells India to uphold Indus water treaty and limit Kashmir hydro work
The ruling says the Indus Water Treaty remains fully in force and requires India to keep observing obligations on the design and operation of its Western Rivers hydroelectric projects.
India must uphold the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, which it suspended amid bilateral tensions, and it must limit work on a hydroelectric plant in the Kashmir region, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague said Monday, according to Reuters.
The court said India last year suspended the treaty that underpins water supply for 80% of Pakistani farms after an attack in Kashmir in April that killed 26 people, which India linked to Pakistani assailants. Islamabad denied involvement and challenged India’s actions, while India also began work to expand reservoir holding capacity at two Kashmir hydro projects.
The PCA ruled that the Indus Water Treaty remains fully in force, noting India had no justification for ending or suspending the agreement. It also directed India to observe obligations related to the design and operation of its hydroelectric projects on the Western Rivers.
