Rio Tinto chair Dominic Barton to lead Canada’s Invest in Canada board

The appointment comes as Ottawa looks to mobilize C$1 trillion, or about $720 billion, in public and private investment over five years for critical minerals and energy projects.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has named Rio Tinto chair Dominic Barton to lead the board of Invest in Canada as the federal agency expands its role in attracting global capital, Mining.com reported.

Barton will work alongside Gurinder Grewal, a founder and managing partner of Los Angeles private equity firm MEM Growth Partners, who was appointed CEO, the Prime Minister’s office said. The pair will help drive investment toward critical minerals, energy and major infrastructure projects.

Ottawa’s stated goal is to catalyze C$1 trillion, about $720 billion, in public, private and institutional investment over the next five years. Invest in Canada is expected to coordinate with the federal Major Projects Office and focus on areas including energy, critical minerals, artificial intelligence and infrastructure.

Barton has chaired Rio Tinto since 2022 and previously chaired Teck Resources before becoming Canada’s ambassador to China from 2019 to 2021. Mining.com said he previously spent more than 30 years at McKinsey & Co, including nine years as global managing partner and six years as Asia chairman, and he has chaired emerging markets investor LeapFrog Investments.
