Sberbank to accept bitcoin, Ethereum and Tether as loan collateral

The bank’s plan hinges on Russia’s new crypto framework taking full effect and the Bank of Russia allowing the assets for public circulation.

Sberbank plans to accept bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether as collateral for loans after Russia’s new crypto rules fully take effect and the Bank of Russia permits those assets for public circulation, according to The Defiant. Sberbank deputy chairman Anatoly Popov said the bank would adapt existing products to meet the new requirements and then expand its range of crypto backed loans, with demand coming from businesses including miners and firms where crypto is a significant part of their assets. Popov said many clients want liquidity without selling their bitcoin, and he added that improved methods for valuing digital collateral could broaden the customer base. The bank previously ran a pilot, including a December 2025 corporate loan to Russian mining operator Intelion Data where the digitally mined currency served as collateral. The Defiant also notes that Russia will continue to prohibit crypto payments domestically, while a regulated framework under the new law will include existing financial institutions plus crypto exchanges and digital repositories. The law is set to take effect Sept. 1, and market participants have through July 1, 2027 to obtain licenses and meet compliance requirements.
