Two supertankers hit by unknown projectiles in Strait of Hormuz
The UKMTO said the incident occurred late Monday, with a vessel reporting being struck by three unknown projectiles east of Khasab, Oman.
Two oil supertankers were hit by unknown projectiles while transiting the Strait of Hormuz outbound from the Persian Gulf, a maritime risk management firm said, as renewed Middle East tensions raised concerns for oil flow recovery. OilPrice reported that Marisks said the Sidr VLCC, operated by Saudi state shipping giant Bahri, was struck northeast of Khasab, Oman.
In a second incident, Marisks also cited an advisory reported by Bloomberg that the Senegal Prosperity, operated by South Korea tanker fleet operator Sinokor, was hit as it attempted to exit the Persian Gulf near Oman.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations, a Royal Navy-sponsored organization, warned it received a report of an incident late Monday, stating the event was about 17 nautical miles east of Khasab. No casualties or environmental impact were reported, according to the UKMTO statement summarized by OilPrice.
The report also referenced Iran’s claim on Monday that a supertanker caught fire after hitting two naval mines in the southern Strait of Hormuz, as stated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in an announcement carried by Iranian media.
