UK PM Burnham pledges “substantial change” in first Commons address

Burnham said problems with indefinite IPP sentencing have been “ignored for too long,” and he framed Ukraine as part of the UK’s continuing policy direction.

The Guardian reports that UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham began his first statement to MPs in the House of Commons by paying tribute to his predecessor, Keir Starmer, saying Starmer gave Labour a platform and that the government will use it well.

Burnham said the country needs substantial change, and he argued that problems with indefinite IPP sentences have been ignored for too long, while also asserting the UK is standing by Ukraine in line with the policy he says was set out by Starmer.

In the same address, Burnham told MPs he has visited every region of the UK and Ukraine over the summer and said the government has had a strong sense of momentum since he became PM.

Separately within the live updates, the outlet also noted plans in Scotland to slash the number of NHS boards, plus announcements including defence spending targets to raise defence spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2035.
