US JOLTS job openings edge up to 7.27 million in July

Job openings rose to 7.271 million in July from 7.182 million in June, but the figure was slightly below the 7.3 million expected by markets.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that job openings increased slightly to 7.271 million in July, up from 7.182 million in June. The reading came in below the market expectation of 7.3 million, according to FXStreet.

In its release, the BLS said hires and total separations both changed little at 5.1 million. It also noted that quits were 3.1 million, while layoffs and discharges were 1.7 million.

FXStreet said the report did not trigger a noticeable market reaction. At the time of publication, the US Dollar Index was up 0.15% on the day at 99.55.

The JOLTS report is released by the BLS at 14:00 GMT and is used by markets as a gauge of labor demand, with data corresponding to July and the closely watched nonfarm payrolls arriving later in the week based on August data, FXStreet added.
