Xi and Putin pledge to deepen Shanghai Cooperation Organization role

The leaders met in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on the sidelines of the SCO summit and called for closer coordination amid tensions with Washington and its allies.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to strengthen the role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation during a meeting on Monday, with both leaders emphasizing deeper strategic coordination as relations with Washington and its allies remain strained, according to a readout from China.

The two presidents met on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Xi said the SCO has a mission to safeguard regional stability and promote regional development amid growing uncertainty in the international situation.

Putin said Russia and China should enhance solidarity and cooperation within the organisation and play a guiding role, the Chinese readout said.
