BHP’s chief commercial officer Rag Udd to leave at end of January

Udd’s exit comes as China’s state-linked buyer, CMRG, has pressured iron ore suppliers for improved terms and has previously led to buying bans until an April agreement.

BHP said chief commercial officer Rag Udd will leave the world’s largest miner at the end of January, creating a key leadership vacancy overseeing sales and marketing of its major commodities.

Udd, who is based in Singapore and has spent nearly three decades at BHP, has led negotiations with China Mineral Resources Group (CMRG), a state-backed buyer that has intensified pressure on iron ore producers to secure better purchasing terms for Chinese steelmakers.

CEO Brandon Craig said Udd will pursue an opportunity outside the company, and noted that replacing him puts one of BHP’s most sensitive China commercial relationships on Craig’s agenda.

Mining.com reports that Udd’s departure follows a leadership refresh at BHP and comes as analysts expect further high-profile changes, with iron ore producers bracing for negotiations to become more difficult after CMRG’s stepped-up pressure last year, including bans that prevented steel mills from buying some BHP products until an agreement was reached in April.
