China calls for global AI cooperation as US tech tensions persist
The call came as Washington weighs possible restrictions on Chinese data center equipment and open-weight AI models ahead of a Xi-Trump meeting later this month.
China’s science and technology minister Yin Hejun urged countries to work together on artificial intelligence, warning that both opportunities and risks have emerged as AI enters an “unprecedentedly active” period, according to a statement published by the Ministry of Science and Technology, cited by SCMP Economy.
Speaking at the G20 Innovation Ministerial Meeting in the United States, Yin said there is an urgent need for joint efforts to address AI’s challenges, with the remarks delivered as Beijing and Washington face renewed trade and technology tensions.
SCMP Economy reports the comments come amid concerns that additional US restrictions could hamper China’s technological ambitions. The story notes that Citi Research analysts said a recent flare-up is unlikely to materially disrupt China’s AI exports, arguing that direct US-China trade in the sector is already suppressed at the aggregate level.
