China’s military exercises increasingly target Taiwan blockade, report says
Taiwan’s defence ministry said PLA drills are shifting toward “joint blockade and control” of the island’s external sea and air routes, including amphibious landing operations.
Taiwan’s defence ministry warned that the People’s Liberation Army is stepping up preparations for a blockade of the island, while sharpening plans to break such a cordon in response, according to the SCMP Economy.
The assessment was made in Taiwan’s “2026 China Military Power Report,” submitted to the legislature this week alongside a five-year force development plan and next year’s proposed defence budget.
The report said PLA exercises have increasingly focused on “joint blockade and control” of Taiwan’s external air and sea routes, with training that includes maritime and air blockades or quarantines, joint firepower strikes, seizure of battlefield superiority and joint amphibious landing operations.
It said the overall aim is to strengthen the PLA’s ability to target Taiwan and conduct anti-access and area-denial operations to counter potential foreign intervention, adding that Beijing has never ruled out using force to reunite Taiwan with the mainland.
