Germany blames Russia for attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle airport

German officials said the drone was found near a Ukrainian plane on Aug. 4 and defused before it could be used.

Germany blamed Russia for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month, saying the device was fitted with explosives and was found near a Ukrainian plane on the evening of August 4 before being defused, according to the Associated Press via SCMP Economy.

The German government announced it would shut down a Russian consulate, along with other measures against Moscow, following the incident.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said authorities identified components, explosives, and detonator elements that are known from other Russian hybrid operations tied to its war against Ukraine.

Dobrindt added that intelligence suggests the operation involved people acting on behalf of Russian state entities, without naming specific agencies.
