Matt Clifford joins Anthropic as managing director for international affairs
Anthropic said Clifford will also chair the UK government-backed Aria agency and continue overseeing government engagement outside the US.
The architect of the UK government’s AI strategy, Matt Clifford, has joined US AI startup Anthropic in a senior role, moving from a Downing Street post about a year earlier, according to the Guardian Business.
Clifford is taking the title of managing director, international affairs, and will lead Anthropic’s engagement with governments outside the US, including the UK, Europe, Asia-Pacific and India. The outlet also reports that Clifford resigned from an unpaid AI opportunities adviser role for personal reasons after about six months.
Anthropic said Clifford will remain chair of Aria, the UK’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency that funds “moonshot” science and technology projects, and will continue as chair at Entrepreneurs First, the venture capital firm he co-founded.
The Guardian Business adds that the move has drawn criticism over potential conflicts from a revolving door between government and industry, while Anthropic is also preparing for a stock exchange flotation that could value the company at $2tn.
