MultiversX to pause new transactions ahead of Supernova upgrade

The Supernova activation on Sept. 10 will cut MultiversX block times to 600 milliseconds from six seconds, after a roughly 24-minute stop in new pool transactions under the old schedule.

MultiversX says its Supernova upgrade, scheduled to activate Sept. 10 during epoch 2233, will make the blockchain about 10 times faster by moving to 600-millisecond block times from six seconds, forcing more than 5,000 nodes to migrate to software that supports the new rules, according to CryptoSlate.

Beyond shorter block intervals, Supernova is designed to restructure MultiversX’s consensus pipeline so validators can vote on a block while execution runs in parallel, removing transaction execution from the critical path that previously limited block production. MultiversX also expects intra-shard finality to drop below 250 milliseconds and cross-shard settlement to fall from about 18 seconds to roughly 2.4 seconds, while keeping epoch length unchanged and maintaining backward compatibility for addresses, keys, and balances.

To prepare, MultiversX is giving node operators nine days to complete the upgrade, with a coordinated migration window from Sept. 1 to Sept. 10. MultiversX warned that processing changes require operators to upgrade to keep nodes interpreting transactions the same way, and it noted that while old and new binaries can coexist before activation, outdated nodes could produce different results after the new rules take effect and risk falling out of sync with the majority chain.

MultiversX also plans a temporary slowdown during the transition, with the network stopping acceptance of new pool transactions for roughly 240 rounds under the existing six-second clock, about 24 minutes, while clearing transactions already in flight. On Sept. 1, CryptoSlate reported baseline public network data showing no visible Supernova migration yet, with 95.35% of MultiversX’s 5,171 nodes still on v1.11.11.0. Separately, CryptoSlate said EGLD crossed above $4 over the weekend for the first time since May, reaching about $4.05 before pulling back below the threshold.
