Pocket Bitcoin says breached records linked 291 users to on-chain activity
The Swiss non-custodial service said the exposed correspondence included combinations of names, postal addresses, Bitcoin addresses, and identity or source-of-funds documents, raising phishing and privacy risks.
Pocket Bitcoin said a breach exposed support correspondence for 291 customers, with some copied records linking real-world identities to public Bitcoin activity. The company said the issue expanded the scope described in its Aug. 21 disclosure, after a later update on Aug. 31.
In the update, Pocket Bitcoin said correspondence with partner banks contained varying combinations of names, postal addresses, Bitcoin addresses used for transactions, copies of identity documents, and source-of-funds records. It added that most people in the cohort had only some of those fields exposed, rather than everything in every case.
Pocket Bitcoin emphasized that the information could not move Bitcoin on its own. Bitcoin addresses are public, but connecting an address to a name, and for some customers to a postal address or payment amount, removes a layer of separation between offline identity and on-chain activity, increasing privacy and phishing risk, the company said.
The company said it is non-custodial and never held customers' private keys, and it reported no risk to customer funds. It also warned that details from the incident could make emails, calls, or messages about the breach look more credible, and it said each customer in the affected cohort received an individual notice listing the data involved.
