Singapore pitches role as bridge between Central Asia and Asean
The proposal frames Singapore as a gateway to Southeast Asia, citing a region of more than 700 million people.
Singapore is positioning itself as a bridge between Central Asia and Asean as trade disruption and superpower rivalry push the two regions to look more closely at each other, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet reports that, while there is political appetite, analysts say any trade benefits will depend on overcoming practical hurdles including geography and limited connectivity.
SCMP Economy adds that Singapore’s Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong made the case to the Uzbekistan parliament on Monday, describing Singapore’s role as a longstanding gateway to Southeast Asia.
He pointed to the scale of the Asean-linked market, noting it covers more than 700 million people and includes one of the fastest-growing parts of the world, SCMP Economy reported.
