South Korea’s Kimchi Premium returns as retail demand lifts bitcoin prices

Bitcoin is trading about 1% higher on Upbit than on Binance, reflecting South Korea’s more regulated, locally driven market.

South Korea’s bitcoin “Kimchi Premium” has returned as retail investors step back into the market, with prices on Korean exchanges once again running above global benchmarks, according to Bitcoin Magazine citing Bloomberg and CoinGecko data.

CoinGecko data shows bitcoin is nearly 1% higher on Upbit, South Korea’s biggest exchange, than on Binance, and the premium has been linked to the country’s partial market isolation, including strict capital controls and trading regulations.

The retail-driven gap is more pronounced because the Bitcoin/won trading pair is more common in South Korea than the Bitcoin/U.S. dollar pair elsewhere, a structure that can push local prices higher when demand rises.

Bitcoin is recently trading around $78,287 and is up 24% over the past month, with the renewed enthusiasm tied to expectations around broader U.S. crypto policy, including comments from President Donald Trump about a crypto “Clarity Act” and the U.S. Treasury’s August plan to increase liquidity-support buyback operations.
