UK PM Andy Burnham makes House of Commons debut, vows economic lift
Burnham framed his return to parliament as a push to ease cost of living pressures while shifting more power from London to Britain’s regions.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham faced lawmakers in the House of Commons for the first time since taking office about six weeks ago, as wars in Europe and the Middle East weigh on his agenda to kick-start the economy and ease the cost of living, according to SCMP Economy. He also pledged to oversee a radical redistribution of power from London to Britain’s regions.
In remarks tied to parliament’s return from its summer break, Burnham said he would “unlock a feeling of positivity and possibility in every postcode in Britain” and argued that the next decade can be better than the last, with improved prospects for people and places. SCMP Economy reports the tone contrasted with the approach of his predecessor, Keir Starmer, who frequently emphasized the scale of Britain’s challenges.
SCMP Economy also said Starmer was pushed out as Labour leader by his own party two years after winning the 2024 election. Starmer quit his seat in parliament on Tuesday after 11 years, stating he wanted to focus on other issues including international affairs such as defence, security, trade, and technology.
A special election will be held within weeks to replace Starmer’s seat, SCMP Economy reported.
