Xi, Trump and Putin could meet at next Apec summit in Shenzhen

The Kremlin suggested a trilateral meeting could be possible during Apec’s November 18 to 19 summit in Shenzhen, with Trump’s attendance potentially linked to Xi confirming he will go to a Dec. 14 to 15 G20 meeting in Florida.

A senior Russian aide indicated that Chinese President Xi Jinping, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Russian President Vladimir Putin could meet together at the next Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or Apec, summit. Apec leaders are scheduled to gather in Shenzhen on November 18 and 19.

The development comes after Vladimir Putin confirmed he plans to attend the Apec meeting in May, while Trump has not yet committed. The Russian aide said the likelihood of a trilateral meeting could depend on whether Xi agrees to attend the December 14 to 15 Group of 20 meeting at Trump’s Doral resort in Florida.

The Kremlin aide also pointed to the conditions for the three leaders to meet, describing the scenario in which they would be able to hold a meeting if the relevant attendance decisions fall into place. The same setting would also reflect ongoing coordination among the leaders around major international economic gatherings this year.
