Maltese court acquits tycoon over Daphne Caruana Galizia murder
The acquittal ends a prosecution tied to a 2017 car bomb that helped trigger major protests and topple a Maltese government.
A Maltese court acquitted tycoon Yorgen Fenech of orchestrating the car-bomb killing of investigative reporter Daphne Caruana Galizia, an AFP story said. Fenech had been accused of masterminding the 2017 assassination of the 53-year-old journalist, which previously sparked major protests and brought down a government.
Caruana Galizia’s family said the acquittal denies her the justice they believe she deserves. Her son Matthew Caruana Galizia said jurors made a decision their country may never recover from, while the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom said the verdict sends a disturbing message to those who attack and kill journalists.
The journalist was known for exposing corruption at the highest levels in Malta. She was also described as having shone a spotlight on murky links between the country’s business and political elites.
