Ontology orders node upgrades to v3.1.5 after malicious activity pause
Ontology said it resumed normal mainnet operation on Sept. 2 after an Aug. 31 security pause, and it told sync-node operators to upgrade to v3.1.5 to keep synchronization stable.
Ontology ordered sync-node operators to upgrade to version 3.1.5 after its mainnet resumed normal operation on Sept. 2 following an emergency security pause tied to malicious activity, CryptoSlate reported. The network said the upgrade is mandatory for compatibility and to ensure stable synchronization across the restored chain.
During the pause that began Aug. 31, Ontology suspended block production, leaving on-chain transactions unprocessed. In updates, the team said it initially flagged a potential security concern during a daily security check, and later escalated that description to identify malicious activity targeting the network while remediation, testing, and a network upgrade were underway.
Ontology told users during the disruption not to attempt time-sensitive on-chain transactions and said there was no need to move assets such as ONT and ONG. The network said its investigation found the activity did not involve or compromise user assets, though it has not published an independent forensic report.
The v3.1.5 release includes a Linux AMD64 binary and checksum but does not provide an incident explanation, and Ontology has not linked the code changes to a specific attack path in its public notices. CryptoSlate also noted the tagged code change disables registrations for several legacy native contracts at mainnet block 20,770,894, one block after the 20,770,893 height observed during the halt, and that the restoration announcement confirms mainnet return but not necessarily full recovery across services like public RPC providers, exchanges, wallets, or dapps.
