South Africa probes Airlink flyover safety after Cape Town rugby match
South Africa’s Civil Aviation Authority says it has gathered flight data and could issue a recommendations report after reviewing two Airlink jets that flew low before the August 29 Springboks vs All Blacks match.
South Africa’s aviation regulator is reviewing a low-altitude flyover by two Airlink passenger jets before a rugby match at Cape Town’s DHL Stadium after safety concerns were raised, according to a report by SCMP Economy. The South African Civil Aviation Authority said it obtained flight data recordings and asked Airlink for additional information as part of its assessment, with a full report and recommendations to follow once the review is complete. The agency said the goal is to determine whether the weekend’s events involved safety concerns that warrant further review.
Airlink has withdrawn plans for a similar flyover at an upcoming rugby match in Soweto, the regulator said. Video footage from the August 29 Springboks vs All Blacks game, attended by an estimated 56,000 spectators, circulated online and fueled a debate about potential safety risks.
