US Democrats criticize mining deals in critical minerals contest with China
Lawmakers said safeguards on taxpayer funds are being loosened in the name of competing with Beijing, while critics warn about transparency and favoritism in awarding contracts.
US Democratic lawmakers accused the Trump administration of using the critical minerals contest with China as a cover for corruption tied to mining deals, alleging billions of dollars have enriched the president’s family and friends, according to SCMP Economy.
At a Ways and Means Committee hearing titled “Strategic Partnerships to Secure Critical Resources and Supply Chains,” California Democrat Linda Sanchez said competition with China is not an excuse to abandon safeguards designed to prevent taxpayer funds from being misused for private enrichment.
SCMP Economy reports that Beijing has a near monopoly in processing key minerals including graphite, gallium, tungsten, germanium and rare earth elements, which are used in military systems as well as semiconductor manufacturing and robotics.
While some US industry leaders and mining experts have welcomed investments on national security grounds, many stakeholders have raised concerns about a lack of transparency and favoritism in how mining contracts are awarded.
