Bitdeer buys 200 acres at former Alcoa site for AI and high-power computing
The cryptocurrency miner said it plans to scale its grid operations from 563 MW to 742 MW at the Rockdale, Texas site, where it also has access to a dedicated water supply.
Bitdeer Technologies Group said it spent $100 million to acquire 200 acres at the former Alcoa Corp. site in Milan County, Texas, with plans tied to artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, according to ConnectCRE.
The company, which is also a cryptocurrency miner, said it now owns and operates 255 acres at the Rockdale area site, about 70 miles northeast of Austin, and plans to scale its grid operations from 563 megawatts to 742 megawatts.
Bitdeer said the site includes access to a dedicated water supply, and that its operations at Sandow Lakes Ranch began in 2019.
ConnectCRE noted local economic development efforts have more than replaced jobs lost when Alcoa left, and that the wider campus is earmarked for development that includes residential, retail, office, hospitality, and leisure facilities connected by a series of lakes.
