Howden Re urges cedents to build resilience as reinsurance prices soften

Howden Re said pricing has fallen materially from recent peaks, while remaining elevated versus prior soft-market troughs in many areas.

Howden Re, a reinsurance broker, urged cedents to strengthen resilience and preserve flexibility as the reinsurance and retrocession market softens but still offers opportunities for attractive returns, according to a new report released ahead of the 2026 Monte Carlo Rendez-vous event.

The broker said “building resilience before it is tested” is critical in an environment where conditions remain unsettled externally, adding that event size alone does not determine market response, because dislocations can be driven by multiple converging pressures.

Howden Re said assumptions can shift quickly as pressures accumulate, which it ties to the value of implementing resilience measures while conditions are still supportive.

It also argued that reinsurance capital is increasingly attractive compared with other capital forms, pointing to longer-duration products and diversification, optionality, and alternative capital as ways cedents can manage potential volatility as the market evolves.
